So I suppose I'll join the wagon train and head over to Insane Journal.  Same penname, etc.  Stories reposted and all that.  *tips hat, and saddles up*

Canon and Fiction

November 30th, 2007 (10:38 pm)

I was reading one (of the many) fan-fiction pieces where Severus is discovered to be Harry's father - which I don't do often, but this had some elements of Lupin/Snape - and found myself unreasonably annoyed at the whole thing.  I'm not terribly fond of the idea of Severus as Harry's dad, and think it tends to end up detracting more from their characters than it adds to them, but it's never really bothered me before.

Then I realized I wasn't annoyed at the fic at all - I was annoyed at the Harry Potter canon.  It irked me to read about Severus having some attachment to Lily, because that attachment seemed so contrived in the books that I read a story with it and think: oh yes, of course they grew up in the same neighborhood, a pitying childhood friendship ended abruptly at fifteen with a slur, and he's been nobly in love with her for the next two decades.  Snape has been my favorite character from the first book on, and while many things in book seven irritated me as a Snape fan and a Snupin shipper, I think the Lily subplot seemed about as last-minute as the Lupin-Tonks marriage.

I find it easy enough to believe that Snape could have admired Lily, especially if his home life was miserable, and she struck him as a kind, forceful girl.  I can accept that he was infatuated with her, and that his temper got the better of him in fifth year.  That lines up with Snape's temper in later years, and seems like a fine scenario.  I have difficulty accepting that Snape, who proved he must have some sense of perspective when he betrayed Voldemort, could spend the next twenty years pining and being furious without ever looking at things from a different angle.  At first, yes, perhaps even for a few years, but by the time Harry arrived at Hogwarts one would have expected Snape to move on (preferably, of course, to Remus).

There's more to say on this, regarding Lily's "love" for Snape (she seemed a bit freaked out by him or angry with him most of the time) and the lack of cunning Severus seems to display in the whole affair (and he, Head of Slytherin?), but I'm tired and not reasoning anything out quite right.

Now it's off to wait for midnight so Snupin Santa begins!

Post-Deathly Hallows Fic

August 1st, 2007 (04:07 pm)

All right, so I got tired of rereading my old stories and wincing at them (not that I'm any better at writing now, or make myself cringe any less. ^_^) so I'm posting one I wrote this week after finishing Deathly Hallows.  Needless to say there are spoilers.

Stupid

August 1st, 2007 (04:01 pm)

Both the title of the fic and a good current description of myself - I forgot to mention that all these previously posted stories are either under fanfiction.net or (as this one is) on the Master and Wolf FQF site under the author name 'Clere'.  Right.  And onward.

This one is a short piece from Harry's POV, set after Order of the Phoenix.

current mood: anxious

All right, I'm not very good at this yet, but I'd like to post my old fanfiction up here as well as the more recent stuff.  We'll see how it goes.
